Sutherland Shire Council implemented their GIS web intranet
application whilst already having a web app and another 2 types of
applications developed in Genius. The problem came when a
rationalisation of X-Emulation licenses, suddenly cut the number of
desktops with access to GIS.
The first attempt to solve this solution was to lease a Java
application that could be used over the intranet. This application
was extremely limited in functionality and by using the browser,
Java made it quite slow.

Sutherland were desperate for a desktop solution that would be cheap
to develop or purchase, be scalable and also ready to go in a
limited time.
After seeing some of the other sites developed by Woodward IT,
Sutherland were keen to initially see a prototype, to prove the
concept and the speed of a properly developed web tool. After the
prototype, development commenced on a production app.

The Sutherland GISWeb interface allows users to quickly and easily
navigate, and display the information they require.
- Standard navigation tools: Zoom In, Zoom Out, Scroll
- Zooming to a predefined scale
- Full layer control, where the user can turn on/off multiple
layers at one time. The layers are generated from an ASCII
configuration file
- Certain classes can be selected in the layer manager to
automatically turn on all layers associated with a theme.
These classes are generated from an ASCII configuration file.

The users can click on certain geographical features to produce a
series of formatted HTML reports.
- Property reports for owner and address information
- Adjoining Owner reports
- Waste management service reports
- Planning reports
- All queries interact with Citipac data stored in Oracle

|
Some of the other functionality includes:
- The ability to automatically create DXF or Arc Shape files
from the contents of certain layers in the window.
- Printing to scale. Users can select their paper size, rotation
and scale and obtain a postscript copy of all layers they
currently have turned on including aerial photography and
Sydways images.
- Integration with aerial photography and Sydways imagery.
- The ability to perform wildcard searches on owners names and
addresses.
- The ability to search on places of interest listed in the
front of Sydways.

|
|
|
Mailing list files can be downloaded.
- There are tools that allow users to individually select
properties or to select neighbouring properties and have the
property addresses, owners name and owner's address to be sent
to a comma delimited file.
- At any stage there is a download tool where users can download
the address file and load it straight into Microsoft Access.
