Rockhampton City Council decided to implement a GIS web application after seeing the Tweed interface and also as an alternative for their CUI application which was deployed using PC Genius and MIX emulation. Rockhampton were lucky enough to employ a full time web developer who has worked in coordination with Woodward IT to provide a "slick" looking application. As the application is purely written with HTML and JavaScript it is extremely quick to load and use.

The Rockhampton GIS web interface allows users to quickly and easily navigate, and display the information they require.
  • Standard navigation tools: Zoom In, Zoom Out, Scroll
  • Zooming to a predefined scale
  • Full layer control, where the user can turn on/off multiple layers at one time. The layers are generated from an ASCII configuration file
  • Layers in the layer manager can be clicked on to load metadata HTML pages
  • Certain profiles can be selected in the layer manager which automatically turn on/off certain layers
The users can click on certain geographical features to produce a series of formatted HTML reports.
  • Property Reports
  • Reports on water/sewer/storm water assets
  • Adjacent Owners Reports
  • Map features can be searched for and displayed
  • Report information extracted from Oracle
  • Private Certification reports generated with one mouse click
  • The application uses some DHTML routines to provide fly out menus to access functions rather than displaying seperate windows, adding a professional touch to the application

As well as the main GIS web interface, there are also other specialist functions.
  • The application is designed to accept display requests from GEAC Pathways LIS. The Pathways applications sends a preset URL to the browser to display a property. This allows communication between GIS and LIS on the desktop
  • Photos and scanned diagrams can be associated with a property and displayed ie. blockage diagrams, trade waste diagrams,...
  • Output using GenaCarto components including automatic generation of PDFs for download
  • DXF files can be generated of any layers displayed in the current window and downloaded with the click of one button
  • Various edit functions to locate complaints and add traffic counts, etc.
The web application has successfully run over communication links between the Council's main office and remote depots. It provides these sites with the most up to date information and negates the need for any data to be replicated at these remote sites.

Personnel at the depot can load up scanned diagrams and query infrastructure without having to search through files and have the ability to print them to their local printer.
