TweedMapper

TweedMapper is an application that is sold to real estate agents and other customers of Tweed Shire Council. Its purpose is to deliver sales history, LEP and address information to customers in an interactive graphical environment. The application ships on a CD and the customers do not need any specialist or 3rd party software to use it.

Tweed had been looking at an interactive way to disseminate this information and had originally looked to an internet solution. The problem was in providing an e-Commerce solution for such small transactions. The credit card charges alone to Council have briefly halted the process.

The solution was to develop a method of delivering this application on CD where Council could have a one off charge and then subsequent charges for data updates. Woodward IT was contracted to develop the application and also work out a way of distributing the information without users having the ability to directly access the data and hence on-sell it.

The end result was TweedMapper, an application that runs on any PC and requires the use of the master CD. After installing the software the user can immediately begin searching for addresses, lot and plan numbers, road names or strata numbers and then immediately see the property and its attributes.

Because TweedMapper has been designed for public use, its interface is extremely simple and easy to use. The application consists of a general map window, navigation tool bar and Windows menu structure.

The starting window has been designed to highlight the the population centres of the Tweed as well as a topographic overview of the shire.

TweedMapper ships with a few additional layers of public information which the user can turn on and off. This list of layers will continue to grow over time. These layers are all configured prior to shipping and Council has full control over the order, scale thresholds and exactly which layers the user can turn on and off.

Layers such as the LEP can be turned on to see a colour coding of the zones, or other layers such as house numbers. All of the map data is in a proprietary format, so it cannot be loaded into other CAD or GIS packages.

One of the search options in TweedMapper is by address. This is the most common form of searching as this is how most people identify their properties.

The search is flexible in that the user only has to enter a partial address such as just the street name without a house number. The user is then presented with a list of all the matching addresses from which to pick one.

After the property is found, it is displayed in the map window and highlighted. The property remains highlighted as the user zooms around.

There is one search where the user can type in lot, section and deposited plan numbers to find. This is a good option for real estate agents looking for properties that have not been given an address. The search dialog contains two fields to enter the lot and plan numbers. Only the DP number is mandatory. By only entering the DP number, the user is presented with a list of all the lots on that DP.

After the property is found, it is displayed in the map window and highlighted. The property remains highlighted as the user zooms around.
