OASIS

OASIS (Online Airtrain Safety Induction Service) is a web application designed to manage the safety and training requirements for Brisbane's Airtrain. Not only does the application provide online training and assessment, it is also repsonsible for managing and recording all safety training for employees.

Brisbane's Airtrain is committed to the safety and well-being of all employees and contractors. Hence, it was decided a system was needed to ensure that everyone was well versed in the hazards and safety procedures required when working in the rail industry. The system had to be autonomous and thorough.

In order to ensure an above average level of safety training was provided, OASIS was created by redeveloping existing dated training courses, into a simple format where the intent of each course could be easily understood. Safety training has turned from being a necessary "bore" into something quick, easy and acceptable by all participants.

OASIS was built using a combination of Apache Web Server, PHP, Javascript, PostgreSQL and MapServer running on a linux server. OASIS is self-managing, meaning that all of the web pages are dynamic and can be edited through simple tools, negating the need for staff to have knowledge of HTML, JavaScript, databases and web servers.

This page contains a summary of some of the key areas of OASIS. Click on any of the smaller screen shots to see them enlarged.

OASIS has been designed to be rapidly accepted by anyone that uses it. No longer is safety material presented on black and white overheads or long-winded PowerPoint presentations. The safety material has been rewritten, de-jargonised, modernised and stylised. OASIS ensures that all users will have an excellent level of safety awareness upon completion of courses.

The OASIS safety training content is accessed from oasis.airtrain.com.au. Each OASIS user is given a user name and password to log into OASIS.

OASIS contains a series of safety courses that are not applicable for every user. When a user is set up, the OASIS Administrator is responsible for deciding which courses need to be undertaken.

After a user firsts logs in, they immediately see the outstanding online courses they have yet to complete (or are about to expire). Most of the safety courses are only valid for 12 months. OASIS automatically generates email reminders when courses are about to expire.

It was recognised that the main reason people become "bored" with safety lectures is that they drag on. For this reason, the safety courses in OASIS have been broken into smaller modules. Each module is not much more than a single web browser page and usually does not take more than 5 minutes to complete.

Each module contains a page of safety information, followed by a page of assessment.

This facility of breaking courses into modules, allows users to complete a safety course over a period of a couple of days, rather than in one hit. Employees can rapidly undertake safety training from home, instead of dedicated time away from the office.

One of the safety courses contained in OASIS is Location Familiarisation. This course is undertaken be every OASIS user and alerts them to the location of significant features along the BARL (Brisbane Airport Rail Link).

One of the modules in this course is the interactive mapping tool which allows users to zoom around the track, recognise streets and areas of significance around the track and view photos of actual items on the track.

The mapping component is powered by MapServer.

Every module in each safety course presents a single theme of information in a condensed form. Where appropriate, actual photos that represent the item, hazard or procedure being discussed are displayed. The extensive use of photos has also proven beneficial in ensuring that participants readily understand the safety material being presented.

The safety material presented was rewritten from old rail industry training manuals into a more understandable "common-speak" format. A major component in the development and acceptance of OASIS has been the fact that Woodward IT was able to absorb the material that was required to be presented without regurgitating the information with industry jargon.

Modules can be accessed from the main course screen or by using the Explorer bar on the left hand side of the application.
