Each Discovery Journey is broken down into a series of tasks for which there are outcomes selected and criteria written against those outcomes. The criteria eventually comprise the components of the report card.

The task criteria are handled like Windows Explorer, so that the teacher feels immediately comfortable. Criteria can be dragged, between the report groups (Information Exhibitor, Procedural Implementer, Multiliteracy Communicator and Task Engager) as well as edited like file names in Windows Explorer.

The criteria entered then form the basis of the Marker Board (see below).

One of the initial phases of planning, is to select the outcomes that the Discovery Journey will address. From the set of Discovery Journey outcomes, a subset is selected that the task will address. This allows some outcomes to be tested more than once in a Discovery Journey.

Once again, an Explorer like interface is used, to drag outcomes between the selection of all outcomes for the Discovery Journey and the task. As with most of the dialogs, just the outcome code is used to save on screen space, but the outcome text and elaborations are always visible/available on the dialog.

The Marker Board is where teachers can mark the criteria entered for the tasks. The teacher only has to click in the appropriate mark column to add or move the mark. Marking does not have to be done all at once. The Marker Board can be loaded and ticked for only the criteria evaluated, saving the teacher a lot of effort at report card time.

One of the big benefits is that the Marker Board allows the teacher to mark one student at a time or a range of students. For instance, if an entire class has similar marks, all of the students can be selected and marked, and then the marks are saved for each student. From there, individual students can be selected, and their individual marks altered away from the norm.

The marking criteria is specific to North Lakes but means:

  • P - Progressing towards attainment
  • A - Attainment
  • M - Mastery

Also on the Marker Board, is the ability to record demonstrations against outcomes assigned to each task. Once again like the marking of criteria, demonstrations can be recorded at any stage, and in any order. Also, demonstrations can be applied to individual students or to a selected group, with one click.

Recording of demonstrations is important, because it forms the evidence needed by teachers to assign levels achieved by students.

The codes used for outcomes are:

  • D - Demonstrated
  • DA - Demonstrated with assistance

Another of the major components of Curriculum Liberator is the ability for teachers to assign levels to students at the critical junctures. This is how students are now tracked during their school life, to ensure they are progressing at the expected norm.

The Level Board is used to get an overview of which levels a student has been assigned, as well as where demonstrations have occurred. Demonstrations of each outcome are listed, and by clicking on the demonstration date, the Marker Board will load for that Discovery Journey, so that teachers can see the criteria used to assess whether the demonstration was warranted.

Teachers also have the ability to see which teacher and when previous levels were assigned, as well as seeing outcome text by moving their mouse over the outcome box. Once again, teachers can save a lot of time by assigning a level to one student or a group of students, for one strand in a key learning area or all strands.

Some of the features added for administration staff include the ability to generate summarative reports and graphs on how students are performing. Teachers can generate graphs on the following:
  • Level attainment between classes
  • Level attainment between male and female students - To assist in determining whether Discovery Journeys that focus on a particular key learning area favour a gender.
  • Level attainment for an individual student compared against a cohort of students
  • Level attainment between the current date and a previous date - To assist teachers in seeing the changes made by level attainment
  • Demonstration count for a key learning area - To assist in an overview to determine outcomes that are being used frequently

There are quite a few specific reports generated by Curriculum Liberator, both for Discovery Journeys and globally. Official reports are created automagically in Microsoft Word based on school templates or via HTML for global reports.

The following global reports are produced:

  • Curriculum Tapestry - which curriculum organiser Discovery Journeys fall into
  • Productive Pedagogies - which pedagogies are addressed by Discovery Journeys
  • Unused Outcomes
  • Level Attainment - for an individual student

The following reports are produced for a Discovery Journey:

  • Discovery Journey Overview Page
  • Mountain Page
  • Outcome Selection
  • Wall Charts
  • Parent Partnership Information
  • Parent Partnership Meeting
  • Learning Celebration Invitation
