Curriculum Liberator

Curriculum Liberator was developed between Woodward IT and North Lakes State College to enable their philosophy of life long learning coupled with a transition to a new series of syllabuses in Queensland.

The application encompasses many things, including: designing units of work known as "Discovery Journeys", recording demonstrations against outcomes, recording level attainment, generating report cards as well as producing a suite of reports.

Curriculum Liberator has been designed to be used in a distributed environment, so that each teacher can record/update details about students from their own classroom. Rather than marking details for report cards at the end of a Discovery Journey, teachers can mark or record demonstrations once criteria have been addressed.

The education philosophy used at North Lakes State College is unique and is not covered on these pages. Instead, read on to see some of the components of Curriculum Liberator that have been developed to cater for this strategy that may appear common to you. Curriculum Liberator has been designed for busy teachers to streamline the amount of effort required for planning and marking. Each of the key areas of the application can be loaded from a single mouse click on a series of recognisable icons.

As for simplicity, the planning process has been broken into a series of smaller components so that teachers do not have to suffer from "GUI envy" as there is an incredible amount of information that goes into a Discovery Journey.

One of the dialogs used in Curriculum Liberator, is the Outcomes Browser, which allows the teacher to navigate through the eight key learning areas (syllabuses) and relevant strands. Also, integrated as the ninth key learning area is the Year 2 Net.

The outcomes are presented in a graphical form and can be dragged onto Discovery Journeys when they are to be used. The Outcomes Browser highlights outcomes that have already been used in a different colour, as well as displaying discretionary outcomes in another colour.

All of the outcomes from the KLAs are available, including Foundation Level and Beyond Level 6. There is also an IEP/ISP level which can be edited, like the foundation level, to add new outcomes for students with learning difficulties.

In order to assist in the planning process, certain documents have been linked to various items to provide a one-stop solution. For instance, double-clicking on outcomes, in the Outcomes Browser will load the elaborations for that outcome. All of the following documents are available from the syllabuses or other educational documents:
  • Outcome elaborations - Sourcebook Guidelines
  • Strand statements - Syllabus
  • Level statements - Syllabus
  • Curriculum Organiser statements
  • Productive Pedagogies - Classroom Reflection Manual

At North Lakes State College, units of work are known as Discovery Journeys. In Curriculum Liberator, Discovery Journeys are handled like word processing documents, in that one is opened/loaded and worked on. This way a planning session can span multiple days and Discovery Journeys can be opened and closed as required.

There are four types of Discovery Journey supported:

  • Year Level
  • Preschool
  • Specialist (Music, HPE, LOTE)
  • IEP/ISP

The planning process has been broken down into a series of components to allow for simpler data entry. The information is then used on a series of reports for each Discovery Journey and report cards.

There is also a collection of all messages used in Discovery Journeys called the Message Bank. Like the Outcomes Browser, messages can be dragged onto the appropriate data entry screens saving the teacher any duplicate typing.

Another of the components of Discovery Journey planning is Productive Pedagogies. Here the teachers can select the appropriate pedagogy class from each of the main groups as well as enter the statement as to how it is being addressed.

Linked to each of the pedagogy classes, is the text from the Classroom Reflection Manual outlining what each means.
